The new generation of woman professionals is showing its prettier face in a traditionally male-dominated and somewhat physical arena. The construction sector is proving more colour-blind and more gender indifferent than ever, clearly indicated by government’s inclusion of women’s skills in the infrastructure development of the country. Construction is no longer the domain of men. Its reputation as a non-traditional career for women certainly hasn’t applied in South Africa, indeed broader Africa, for decades.
Historically, generations of females have been the homebuilder’s in their communities, they just weren’t paid for it and neither was such labour considered as work, simply because a woman’s primary duty was to care for her family. History also does not record the many hundreds of women who were active on local building sites helping to carry water, digging trenches for foundation walls, and thatching roofs. Ever so quietly, and not intentionally, these women acquired skills that had long been considered a ‘man’s work’. Offering those skills into the market is now having an impact on the broader economic growth of the country, more importantly in infrastructure development. Over the past two decades, the number of women-owned construction businesses have grown significantly.
